What is Reiki? 霊気 Reiki (which is pronounced ray-key), is a Japanese technique used for stress reduction and relaxation which aims to promote healing and balance. The word ‘Rei’ means spiritual wisdom and ‘Ki’ means energy which is also known as ‘Chi’ in Chinese, ‘Prana’ in Sanskrit and science calls it a ‘biofield energy’. Reiki is administered by “laying on hands” with the intention of transferring the “universal life force energy” by guiding reiki through specific energy centres or pathways identified as ‘chakras’, ‘meridians’ and ‘nadis’.
Universal life force energy is a non-physical energy that animates all living things. It plays an important part in everything we do; it is also the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life and is believed that ‘Ki’ is influenced by the mind. If you have positive thoughts your ‘Ki’ remains healthy, if you have negative thoughts your ‘Ki’ becomes imbalanced which can lead to dis-ease.
Reiki is a special kind of healing energy that can only be channelled by someone who has received the placement or attunement. Because Reiki is guided by spiritual consciousness, it can never do harm. It always knows what a person needs and will adjust itself to create an effect that is appropriate.
Reiki is spiritual in nature and is a healing that leaves one surrounded with loving feelings of well-being and compassion. It is performed through clothes either seated or lying down. Hands are placed on the body or slightly lifted away, hovering in one place at a time and is best practised in silence.
